Del Rincon Amuzgo

La Barrita, Guerrero, Mexico

Nestled in between Coconut Palm groves, La Barrita is a beautiful rural beach community; ideally located an hour away from the Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International Airport. This juxtaposition between its connection to an important tourist hub and its remote tranquility, makes it an ideal spot for a beach-side bed-and-breakfast.

The design of Del Rincon Amuzgo had to overcome the challenges of its site, a long and narrow lot leading directly to the beach. The solution was to place the guest rooms at the edge of the property, each side separated by a narrow linear courtyard. Exterior living rooms with outdoor furniture and hammocks separate each of the rooms. This hierarchy towards the exterior over interior can also be seen in other design elements, such as the exterior dinning area and the outdoor shower of the "honey moon suite". The careful design of the outdoor experience allows for the creation of an environment that encourages guest to spend time outdoors, rather than in their rooms.

The choice of materials was made with great care, in order to create a sustainable design that could easily be built by local craftsmen; as well as easily maintained. This led to a palette of local stone, bajareque ( a regional stick-and-mud construction method), and simple wood framing. The use of imported elements such as concrete and brick was limited to key areas. Furthermore, Del Rincon Amuzgo looks to create even a deeper connection with the community by employing local craftsmen for the creation of its furniture, doors, linen, and even the art decorating the hotel's walls.
