Rouna Township
Port Moresby, National Capital District, Papua New Guinea
The Masterplan for Rouna Township had to deal with two large challenges, an imposing topography and the difficulty of creating a responsible and elegant design for a multi-million dollar project in one of the world's weakest economies (at the time of this design, the GDP of Papua New Guinea ranked 115th according to the IMF). Instead of trying to design every building and space within the 41 hectare township, the masterplan instead focuses on creating a series of guidelines and rules for development; as well as the design of public spaces, amenities, and the infrastructure of the community. The emphasis on the public elements of the community allows for investors and developers to build out the rest of the development as the demand for different elements arises.
Rouna Township was planned as an active sustainable environment. Pedestrian walkways and large sidewalks ensured that spaces were safe and comfortable for residents, increasing the activity in the district throughout the day. Parks and plazas are sprinkled throughout the township, often adjoining denser office and commercial areas; creating a possibility for restaurants or shops to spill out into the public realm. The mix of uses and spaces throughout the design looks to create a community that is active throughout the day.
